1.3 Teaching System
The SMAN 2 Banjarmasin held class from Monday to
Friday. The class starts at 7:30 am up to 4:00 pm. The allotted time for each
subject is 1 hour and 30 minutes. One subject is divided into two period and
every period has 45 minutes. The students just stay in one room and the
teachers are the one who goes to the classroom. SMAN 2 Banjarmasin follows the
Student-Centered type of teaching. They want to engaged the student in the
class discussion. They want the students to gain or discover knowledge on their
own and the teacher will just be a help on the learning process. In this type
of teaching system the student became more confident and globally competitive.
1.4 Materials and Other Learning Sources
1. Textbooks
2. Media
3. Games
4. Lectures
5. Visual Aids
6. Laboratory Equipment
1.5 Measurement and Evaluation System
SMAN 2 Banjarmasin have 2 semester in a year. They are
using a grade point scale. Unlike in the Philippines, they are using grading
system the grades are given in numbers 1-100 but in SMAN 2 Banjarmasin the
grades are given in letters A-E. Each letters have corresponding equivalent
grade. Below is the table showing the equivalent grade:
1.6 Curriculum
SMAN 2 Banjarmasin follows the kurikulum 2013. The
curriculum is divide into three parts, primary school (Years 1-6), junior
secondary school (Years 7-9) and senior (Years 10-12). The Curriculum is
divided into Four Cores
1. The First Core Competency of Kurikulum 2013 refers to
the religious doctrines that are practised by Indonesian students.
2. The Second Core Competency is the social attitude
competency and refers to the bases of Indonesian Culture, especially as they
relate to society and the existence of students.
3. The Third and Fourth Core Competencies are about the
knowledge and skills for each subject.
2. Pedagogical Contents
2.1 Teaching Methods
A teaching method compromises the principles and
methods used by teachers to enable student learning. My mentor, Bapak Sugeng
makes use of the Lecture Method for his Grade 11 Science classes in their
Physics Subject. Bapak Sugeng will usually introduce or explain the topic to
the students especially the formula and how it was derived. He would then give
examples of worded problem regarding their topic afterwards he would give
problems for the student to answer on their own. In this kind of method the
teachers are more active and students are passive but my mentor would always
ask question to the students to keep them attentive and to avoid them being
bored by the lesson especially that the subject is Physics. Physics is commonly
known as a hard and boring subject for the students so engaging them to the
discussion will help them understand the lesson better.
2.2 Learning Materials
Learning Materials are the resources that the teachers
use to deliver their instruction better. Bapak Sugeng made use of Book entitled
“ Buku Fisika Kelas XI SMA” (Book Of Physics Class 11 SMA) and worksheets.
These learning materials are important because they can significantly increase
student understanding and achievement. A worksheet may provide opportunities to
practice new skill gained in class. This process will help in increasing the
learning process by allowing student to explore knowledge independently. And
books may serve as a reference material for the students. v
2.3 Sources of Learning and Technology
In terms of technology, considering that my mentor is
a senior teacher who is not exposed to modern use of technology in teaching he
would opt to use the traditional method of teaching so I didn’t get the chance
to observe using modern technology like projectors, power points and etc. This
in a way could be advantageous to teachers when technology and computer fails,
we all go back to the basics.
2.4 Authentic Assessment
As I stated earlier, my mentor is a traditional
teacher so he would also use traditional type of assessments for him to assess
the knowledge gain by the students. He would use pen and paper test exam like
problem solving regarding the lesson in physics.

there any absent for today?
Very good class!
C. Review of the part lesson
This time, who among has an idea about our
last topic?
Very Good, Class!
Lesson Proper
A. Motivation
Ok class, today we will play a game called
4 Pics 1 Word. I will show 4 pictures in the screen and all you have to do is
the guess the word.
Are you ready
now class?
(The teacher will
flash the pictures.)
(The teacher
will give reward to those who guess the word correctly)
B. Discussion
Class did you enjoy the game?
So now what do you think our
lesson for today?
First, let’s
talk about what is weather. Anyone from the group can give their idea about
weather?
Precisely!
Weather is the changes in the atmosphere that occur on a daily basis. Also it
is the short term condition of the atmosphere. Did you get it?
Now, what have
you observe in our weather? Every day or every hour?
Very Good!
Those are just two among the four seasons that we have here on earth. But
first, let’s talk about what is a season. Who among the class can give their
idea what is a season?
Precisely!
Season is a period of the year that is distinguished by special climate
conditions. In connection to this the earth has its four seasons. (The
teacher will show a picture of the four season which are autumn, winter,
spring and summer)
All of this
happens due to our climate on earth. Now, who among you can define what is
climate?
Very Good!
Also climate is a long term condition in the atmosphere. In connection to
this, Indonesia belongs t0 the tropical climate in the world. The weather is
changing such as sunny, cloudy and rainy. This is because of the three
aspects which were the sun, wind, and water. Weather also affects human
starting from the availability of natural resources, transportation
equipment, and even the smooth human activities. Now would you like to give
your ideas what are the other things that weather affects human live?
Very good
Class! Now, did you know weather, seasons and climate also the things that
weather affects human lives?
By this time,
I will show you a video clip and it is a song. This song will help you for
further understanding about our topic. Are you ready?
Before we
proceed to our next lesson, let’s have an activity. I will group you into 4
groups, each group should possess 7 members. (The teacher will properly group
the pupils into 4 groups.) I have 4 set puzzles here, per group should fix
the puzzle and write the correct name for each puzzle, afterwards per group
will present what they see in the puzzle. Each group will present the puzzle
in front and each group should have 1 presenter. I will give you 5 minutes in
doing your activity.
Do you understand
it? Are you ready? (The teacher will give the puzzle to the 4 groups.)
If that so,
timer starts now!
Stop class!
Kindly settle your work. And listen to the presenters as they present their
work.
Very good,
Class! Now go back to your seats (the teacher will count 5).
In connections to the different questions I raised to you
class while you are presenting, this questions cannot be formulated or
created without the use of the WH questions. And I think class, you have an
idea what are the 5W+1H questions. Anyone from the class?
Exactly! The
Wh- questions are who, what, why, where, when, which and how. (The teacher
will list down the Wh- question in the board.)
Who-
person/animal
What –
thing/doing word
Where –
location/direction
When – time
(past/present/future.)
Which – means/
implies choosing one element.
Why – asking
for reason
How – amount
or the other way
Now, let’s
give some examples. (The teacher will give examples each questions.) I think
it is your turn to give examples each question. Anyone from the class ca give
their examples?
I have a
simple song for the Wh- question class, so you better listen carefully and
watch.
Did you get it class?
Very Good, Class!
C. Generalization
Do you have any question class?
If that so, I’ll be the one who will ask questions. Are
you ready class?
Ok class, what are the 4 seasons?
Exactly! The four seasons are autumn,
spring, winter, and summer. Now who among you can differentiate weather,
season and climate?
Very good, Class! Now, can you give the things that
weather affects us humans?
Well said Class! For the last question, what are the 5W +
1H question?
Awesome, Class! Now all of you are ready to our
activity. Are you class?
Class, before
we go to our activity. We should remember that we must take good care our
environment by avoiding littering, using plastics, and cutting trees. With
that we can show our sympathy and love to our planet. To avoid having
tremendous weather and climate. Also let us explore more things in this world
don’t be afraid to go out with your own boxes.
D. Application
Now, I want
you to answer the following questions on the board. I need 14 volunteers to
answer.
(The teacher
will show the four seasons and the students should write what season is in
picture and identify a statement or sentence where it was under (Form of game
which was entitled Roda Kata Pertanyaan.)

4. Teaching Practice
4.1 Procedures of Teaching
On my first day in SMAN 2 Banjarmasin, I introduced
myself in front of the 35 class one by one. It’s a little bit tiring but I have
fun in interacting with the students.
On the first week, I just observed the class of Bapak
Sugeng in Fisika (Physics). He is using the traditional way of teaching.
Sometimes, when the students have activities Bapak Sugeng will let me help them
in answering the word problems. Also, he let me introduce myself and my
country. I also shared some of the Filipino Culture, Education System and our
greetings.
Before teaching in the class, I consulted with my
mentor Bapak Sugeng, S. Pd and my supervisor Dr. Arif Sholahuddin, MSi about my
lesson plan. And some adjustments were properly corrected.
On my actual teaching, my lesson is about
thermodynamics. I did make use of the Problem-solving method. First, I let my
students play the game 4 Pics 1 Word in order to motivate them and I also gave
some chocolates as reward for those who answer correctly. Afterwards, I
introduce the terms we may encounter during the lesson. Furthermore, I raised
questions to measure their background knowledge regarding the lesson so that if
they already have knowledge about the topics I will just give supplemental
lessons if needed and then I proceeded to the discussion proper. At the last
part of the discussion I showed them the relations of work, heat and energy
before introducing the formula. After that, problem solving is the next task
given. A worksheet is provided for them to practice the new knowledge gain. In
addition, there was a presentation of their work in front of the class to help
them acquire self-confidence in speaking in front.
Before ending the class, a round down review of
lessons tackled was conducted by the teacher.
4.2 Time Management and Organizing Activities
In my experience in teaching at SMAN 2 Banjarmasin, I
didn’t have much problem in class and time management because most of my
students are very obedient and follows instructions diligently. This is one of
the things I admired to the Indonesian Education System the Students are very
disciplined. I can call the attention of my students in only one call but still
my interaction among my students is lively and enjoyable.
4.3 Problems Encounter in Teaching
The very big problem I encountered during my teaching
in SMAN 2 Banjarmasin is the language barrier. In one class more than half of
the students don’t speak english but still they can understand it. Good thing
ULM gave each one of us a buddy to help us in interpreting with the students.
My buddy is Nuka. He will always translate my teachings for the student to
better understand the lesson and if the student have question and they can’t
speak english nuka will translate it for me to understand. For me to have an
interacting class I also learn some bahasa words especially the Physics terms.
Secondly, reading materials are all written in bahasa.
No english version is available. And I was lucky to have a buddy who has the
patience in translating the syllabus and books in Physics for me. Afterwards, I
will then search the internet for further supporting information needed on the
lesson.
4.4 Others
One unexpected opportunity was given to me. I was
invited by my supervisor, Dr. Arif Sholahuddin, MSi, to become the resource
speaker to talk about the Science Education in the Philippines. My audience
were the Science Major students in their 6th semester and also some
of the science teachers. Of which I was greatly overwhelmed and thankful for
the opportunity. The talk became lively and interactive. I hope that they were
able to learn something about the Science Education in the Philippines that
they can adopt. And in return the learning that I also received from them will
be also adopted by me.
Summary and
Suggestions
My wonderful experience with the program is that it
helps me appreciate their love for their culture and being patriotic. Which
makes me think that in applying it in my profession in teaching; a teacher must
always appreciate and respect the individuality of his/her students and most of
all the patience and passion for imparting knowledge? I was also able to see a
different kind of education system that is different from the Philippines,
which makes me realized that we may have different kinds of approaches, for as
long as our aim is to educate and it works, then all is well.
My suggestion to this prestigious program is that
perhaps in my humble opinion we could have a proper venue conducive for
continuous links and communications, wherein those new types of systems of
educating, if it is feasible for other countries to adopt. Then this could be
use to improve their respective education systems.
